Story behind the song
In one of the nights that I got good sleep (1/17/2023 - I know because I awoke to a slowly unfolding nightmare of sorts in which I knew the whole time I was in God’s hands), I dreamed that there was a giant water tower with a surrounding structure bolstering it and a building next to it. Something happened that gave clear evidence that the structure would explode within a matter of minutes or hours. People were unsure what to do. There were some missing children that were thought to be around the water tower and were being looked for, all the while knowing that the structure could blow up at any second (The children were found). This dream came to me in the hours just before dawn. While I was awaiting the explosion, I heard what sounded like pounding on the door of my house (Some of you may know what that can mean in our current culture.). There was really no resolution to the dream, but the peace that came over me was in the first verse of a prayer I learned as a child and the accompanying melody. I got up and determined the chords and found two more verses to add. Forty-five minutes later, this song was complete.
Lyrics
Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the LORD my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the LORD my soul to take. Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray the LORD my soul to keep. In the morn when I awake, teach me, the path that I should take. Now I wake to see the light, as God has kept me through the night; And now I lift my voice to pray, that Thou wilt keep me through the day. Amen. Amen.
