A song about growing up in my hometown of Magna, Utah, and staying connected to your roots.
I made this song on a whim using Chat GPT based on the idea that "you can take the redneck of Magna, but you can't take Magna out of the redneck." After running the lyrics through Suno, it came out catchier than expected. I wrote a third verse myself and re-did the second half to get the finished song. I got a lot of plays and positive feedback from people in Magna, which I was really thankful for. It's now the title track to a complete album available on bandcamp and pretty much wherever music is sold online.
Grandpa spent his years in the copper mines
Hands stained red, working overtime
Dust storms rise off the tailings pond
That old town grit still holds on
You can take the redneck out of Magna
But you can't take Magna out of me
I still taste that mineral water
Still see that big C
Main Street shines in the movies
But real life's slow as mud
No matter where I lay my head
Magna's running through my blood
Cyprus Pirates on a Friday night
Blue and gold, under those lights
Pastrami burgers at the Grub Box stand
Nothing fancy, but it sure tastes grand
They dress it up, make it Hollywood
But nothing ever changes like they think it should
You can take the redneck out of Magna
But you can't take Magna out of me
I still taste that mineral water
Still see that big C
Main Street shines in the movies
But real life's slow as mud
No matter where I lay my head
Magna's running through my blood
Got my boots n' jeans at the local Ream's
And some donuts at Roger's Bakery
Used to catch a movie up at the Reel
While my friends took calls at ol' Packard Bell
They dress it up, make it Hollywood
But nothing ever changes like they think it should
You can take the redneck out of Magna
But you can't take Magna out of me
I still taste that mineral water
Still see that big C
Main Street shines in the movies
But real life's slow as mud
No matter where I lay my head
Magna's running through my blood
