Story behind the song
A song of (basically truthful) childhood reminiscences, 3 verses with three quite separate melodic sections in each verse. It always seemed to go down well at the Red Cow and I recorded it here almost straight to retain its child-like quality
Lyrics
When I was small there was a time I recall A bell would chime but I would fall It was more fun to play football But grey hair band glasses peering at me I stated my case but they wouldnt agree They said I was wrong and that I should be A little more preoccupied with division and things like that My granny just looked up with pride as I stopped to stroke her cat Days came and went and never seemed to make a dent And if I screamed people repented I had a dream but I lent It to a stream that I frequented Whenever the day was sunny and fine Id go to the park with tackle and line I never caught much but I had a good time And sometimes people told me off for scaring away the fish My dog would always wag his tail when I fed him from my dish Girls there were some among the others there was one And with her brother I would come and watch with mother with her mum For they had a telly got BBC The aerial was as high as our tree That I used to climb because I could see Away above the houses over to the local park I used to watch the mice run in our greenhouse after dark
