This song came to me as I was trying to understand how so many people - CEO's of large companies, politicians, investors, etc. - could destroy the lives of so many with no remorse. That thought led me to thinking about the ultimate betrayal, and what must have gone through Judas' mind when he realized what he had done.
For Silver
Copyright 2009 Debra Nihan
Verse 1
I turned my back on him for silver
Forsaking everything I knew to be true
I led them to the garden and I gave him over
And there I sold his life for silver
Verse 2
The one that I betrayed for silver
He was the only hope in my wretched life
And in his purest goodness he would still forgive me
But I withdrew my love for silver
Chorus
The jingle of the coin has lost its sweetness
What little I had gained was far exceeded by the cost
In the accounting and the final tally
My one advantage has been lost
For silver
Verse 3
Along the path of pride and envy
To dark deception I have willingly come
No turning back from this my mortal destination
Now to the journey's end for silver
Chorus
How blinded is a man by pure ambition
Who takes an earthly prize but then relinquishes the wealth
Given so freely by the one who loves him
The fatal blow has now been dealt
For silver
